From pride and prejudice to persuasion: Satisficing in mate search (1999)
Authors
Abstract
Examined simple satisficing search heuristics that perform adaptively in the specific domain of biologically realistic mate search problems. Different heuristics in simulation across a variety of search conditions using a variety of performance measures were evaluated. The authors begin the chapter with a male-centered case of 1-sided search, and then proceed to the more realistic case of mutual search, emphasizing female choice as well as male. Findings suggest that the satisficing heuristics for mate search that do best in a given environmental situation are those that exploit the structure of the information in their environments, relying solely on mate values in the 1-sided search, and on expressions of interest or disinterest in the mutual search.
