Abstract

The self-reference effect, a memory effect in experimental social psychology, is analyzed with meta-analytical methods. 162 single effects from 72 experiments were integrated, published in 53 articles between 1977 and 1992. Most of the heterogeneity of results from primary research can be explained with only a few moderators. A frequently reported difference between memory effects of reference to oneself or to other persons seems to be due to the intimacy of the other person. Further results suggest, that a self-reference effect can only be indicated for adjectives but not for nouns that are presented as targets. Two experiments are reported, demonstrating that these results are due to a confoundation of variables.
