Gut feelings: The intelligence of the unconscious (2007)
Authors
Abstract
Reviews the book, Guts vs. brains--A review of gut feelings: The intelligence of the unconscious by Gerd Gigerenzer (2007). The authors reviews evidence accumulated over the past few years suggesting the robustness of this approach for explaining aspects of judgment and behaviour. The book is a layperson's guide to recent research--the new departure is to link heuristics to the unconscious. Gigerenzer suggests that gut feelings or intuitions arise precisely through the unconscious use of heuristics or rules of thumb. Throughout the book, Gigerenzer cites evidence that instinctive responding on the basis of simple rules-of-thumb is adaptive and urges us to trust our intuitions. In general, his approach is very uncompromising--perhaps recognizing that extreme positions are more likely to provoke debate than more moderate ones. The book describes many examples of this, such as when physicians in a Michigan hospital found that a simple computer-based heuristic outperformed a more complex 'rational' model in deciding which patients to admit to the intensive care unit.
